What is AnythingLLM? Features & Flexibility
Hey everyone and welcome back to the channel. Today we're expanding our search for more feature-packed AI tools and exploring a particularly impressive application called AnythingLLM. Since its debut last year, AnythingLLM has steadily gained traction, garnering over 18,000 stars on GitHub and attracting contributions from over 75 developers. And it's no surprise why. This robust application empowers users with a wide range of features and remarkable flexibility for incorporating AI into their workflows.
But what truly sets AnythingLLM apart is its powerful agent system, which unlocks a whole new level of AI capability. Now, you might be thinking, well, what really makes AnythingLLM so special? Buckle up, because here's where things get really interesting. This incredible UI isn't limited to a single AI provider. We're talking a plethora of options. You can plug in your favorite big players like OpenAI, Anthropic, Claude, Groq, Google Gemini, and many more. And if you're all about that local model life, they've got you covered. AnythingLLM seamlessly integrates with local model Champions like Ollama and LM Studio, giving you the ultimate AI playground right at your fingertips.
And here's the kicker: you can use any one of these AI providers to power those awesome built-in agent tools. We're talking about giving your AI the ability to search the web, scrape websites for information, summarize documents, even generate charts, all within your chat. It's like having a superpowered research assistant at your beck and call, powered by your favorite AI model.
But hold on, we're just getting started. AnythingLLM isn't limited to just text-based AI. This application is all about breaking down those barriers and offering a truly immersive and versatile AI experience. Imagine interacting with your AI in a whole new way with its impressive speech-to-text capabilities, or seamlessly uploading and processing a variety of documents—PDFs, text files, Word docs, CSVs—AnythingLLM can handle it. It's all about empowering you, the user, with the flexibility to harness the power of AI using the resources you have available. And to ensure that your data remains secure and organized, AnythingLLM provides robust embedding and vector database features, giving you complete control over your AI environment.
Installation and Initial Setup
Now let's dive into a Hands-On demonstration and see how easy it is to get started with AnythingLLM and explore its incredible agent features. All right, let's get Anything up and running and test out these amazing agent features.
First things first, head over to the AnythingLLM website. You'll find the link in the description below. Download the one-click installer for your operating system. They've got Windows, Linux, and Mac packages available. I'm running Windows today, so I'll grab that version. Once the download is complete, head over to your downloads folder and install the application.
Now let's launch AnythingLLM and see what it's all about.
Connecting Groq and Creating a Workspace
One of the first things you'll notice is the wide selection of AI providers AnythingLLM supports. From OpenAI ChatGPT to Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude, and even local models, you've got all the options. And for this demo, we're going to tap into the speed and efficiency of Groq. I'm a big fan of their cutting-edge hardware and the free usage they offer on their APIs.
So to get an API key, I'm going to head over to console.groq.com in my browser. I'm already logged in. Navigate to the API key section on the left and generate a new key. With my Groq API key copied, I'll paste it into AnythingLLM, select the impressive Llama 3.1 70B versatile model from the dropdown menu, and proceed to the next page.
This page explains a little bit more about your LLM configurations. Click Next when you're done looking over it. There's a skippable survey here, so I'll click Skip Survey at the bottom. Next, I'll give my workspace a descriptive name. I'll call it Groq since we're using the Groq model for this session and click through.
And just like that, we've landed in the AnythingLLM UI, greeted with a warm welcome message and some helpful tips. We can jump right into chatting by clicking on our Groq workspace in the left-hand tab.
Basic Chat and Document Upload
Let me see if it knows how to make a pizza. I guess it does, these ingredients look good.
Right off the bat, you'll notice the document upload feature that will allow us to upload our personal documents and have the LLM answer questions using the documents as reference. Click that paperclip icon in the message input box, upload your PDFs, text files, or whatever document you would like to have the model analyze. The model will parse the document and use information in the document in its responses to your query.
Configuring AI Agent Skills
But what I really like about this UI, and what I believe truly elevates AnythingLLM, is its powerful agent capability and its use of pre-crafted agent tools like the web search, web scraping, and even chart generation tools. What's even cooler is that you can dedicate a specific LLM to power your agent, different from your main chat LLM, from a completely different AI provider.
To configure this, click the gear icon next to your workspace name and head over to the agent configuration tab. Select your preferred AI provider, pop in your API key, and choose your desired model.
Now the fun begins. Click on 'Configure Agent Skills' to equip your agent with special abilities like RAG and long-term memory, view and summarize documents, scrape websites, generate charts, and web search.
Some of these, like 'Summarize Documents' and 'Scrape Websites', are ready to go out of the box. Others, like 'Generate Charts' and 'Web Search', need a bit of setup with an API key. For web search, AnythingLLM supports a variety of providers, giving you the freedom to choose what works best for you. You can pick from Google Search Engine, Serper, Bing Search, You.com, or SERP API for this demo.
We'll stick with the Google search engine. To set this up, we need two things: a search engine ID and a programmatic access API key. It's super easy to set up. Just click the 'from Google here' link and log in to your Google account. I'm already logged in. To create a new search engine, give it a name, decide if you want to include images, and hit create.
On the next screen, click customize. Take note of your project ID. We'll paste that into AnythingLLM in just a bit. Now head back and create your programmatic access API key by going to Programmatic Access, clicking Get Started, then Get a Key, and finally creating your key. Now grab both the search engine ID and API key and head back to the AnythingLLM terminal.
Demo: Using the Web Scraper Agent
Paste both keys in their respective fields and save your settings. Now let's go back to the main chat UI and put these agent skills to the test. Click the '@' button in the message input box and select your desired skill. We'll start with the web scraper skill.
I want to know more about the Llama 3.1 8B Hugging Face model, so I'll ask the agent, 'What can you tell me about this web page?' and paste the link. The agent springs into action, activating its scraping tool and getting to work. In this case, it tells me the content was too long to display in full and provided a handy summary instead.
Checking the response after the agent finished its process, it did an amazing job, accurately scraping the page and delivering a detailed summary covering everything from the license agreement to technical specifications. Impressive.
Demo: Using the Web Search Agent
Next up, web search. Let's see if the agent can unearth some info on OpenAI's secret strawberry project that has the AI community buzzing, making everyone go nuts. I'll select the web search tool and ask, 'Search the web for news on the strawberry project by OpenAI.'
Once again, the agent kicks into gear, returning with a variety of relevant news articles about this mysterious project. It even brought up Sam Altman's antics on social media platforms like Twitter hyping up the news behind Strawberry. I have to admit that having tools like this available during research will be incredibly helpful.
Customizing Text-to-Speech Voices
As an added bonus, the UI comes equipped with a recently updated text-to-speech system so you can listen to your AI's responses. Here, take a listen: "According to recent news reports, OpenAI is working on a secret project called Project Strawberry, which is a novel approach to artificial intelligence (AI) that aims to enhance AI reasoning, planning, and execution. The project is reportedly building on OpenAI's previous Q* project and is supported by Microsoft. Project Strawberry is said to be a research project that aims to enable AI models to reason and do deep research on complex problems, potentially giving ChatGPT more freedom to search the web and solve complex problems."
You can customize your listening experience by adjusting the settings and changing the voices if you like. Head over to the settings menu, navigate to the 'Voice and Speech' section, and choose your preferred TTS engine. OpenAI, 11 Labs, and the recently added open-source Piper TTS are all options. Select your favorite voice, give it a listen with the play sample button, and save your settings.

We've only scratched the surface of what AnythingLLM can do. This UI is packed with even more features that we didn't explore in this video, such as the embedding and multimodal features, and I highly encourage you to check them out.
